Sector Summary: The dessert category is competitive, but not as competitive as some of the other sectors within the food industry. New concepts, such as frozen yogurt, cupcake shops and emerging ice cream brands, have been to build a meaningful business and find a very loyal customer base. For the most part, the sector is very seasonal with a significant portion of sales being generated in the summer months. This is especially true in the colder regions of the US. We like the sector but favor brands that have more strategic growth plans and show consistent year over year sales growth.

Interview with Joe Novak, Senior VP of Franchise Marketing & Development for Mathnasium
FRANCHISE CHATTER27 Jan 2012 | 8:56 amThis is a guest blog post by Annabel Jones. For some, math is really as easy as 1-2-3. For others, it’s about as painful as a trip to the dentist. Mathnasium, the rapidly growing children’s education franchise, aims to change that. Mathnasium has been franchising since 2004, but long before the concept was growing above 2% a year, educator Larry Martinek was making a difference in the lives of his math students. Larry noticed that his students were developing mathematical shortcuts: ways of solving problems not taught in his or other teachers’ classrooms. Other teachers saw these… -
Franchisee Incentives
FranchiseFuturesBlog7 Jan 2012 | 10:08 pmMoving forward from a challenging year for the franchise industry we’re seeing some smart incentives to a path of organic growth. It has become increasingly competitive and with a tight lending environment growth has slowed across many franchise categories. The point here, is that as you research franchise models look at their expansion plans, ask how they are expanding, is there any funding available and what type is available, have their franchise fees and or royalties been lowered or even waived? An example of these types of incentives is Papa John’s where they are cutting… -

The Answer: 39,312,039 Big Macs | The Question….
17 Jan 2012 | 9:02 pmHow many McDonald’s Big Macs would you have to sell in order to break even on your investment in a McDonald’s franchise? And…why should it matter? It matters because once in awhile, people looking at franchises need to be humbled. It’s good for the soul. (Supposedly) If I could get paid $100 for every time someone, (after finding out that I was in franchising) asked me how much a McDonald’s franchise would cost to buy, I’d have enough money stashed to at least send in the down payment required for one restaurant. Seriously. Investing… -

Franchise Business Opportunity Trends For 2012
3 Jan 2012 | 1:53 pm(This is a guest post from The Franchise King®, Joel Libava) It's that time of year....it's time to look at some of the trends that will shape franchising. One trend that won't change is the one having to do with more and more people deciding to take more control over their professional lives...their careers. While some will ultimately choose to stay in the jobs they have, others will take the leap; they'll look into business ownership. Of course, looking into becoming the owner of a small business is quite different than actually becoming an owner. It is quite a leap, but it can be done. -

Employers & Social Media: NLRB 2nd Report Concerning Social Media
26 Jan 2012 | 8:31 amJon Hyman wrote on his Ohio Employer's Law Blog that the NLRB has issued a 2nd report on social media as protected concerted activity. If you are an employer considering discipline or termination of an employee resulting from social media activity you need to be very careful. Jon points out: This report underscores that employees’ use of social media to discuss the workplace and work-related issues, and the impact of business’s social media policies on those discussions, remains at or near the top of the NLRB’s priorities. Because the NLRB is taking… -

19 Jan 2012 | 8:24 pmFranchisee lawyer Richard Soloman suggests there may be watershed changes in franchising over the next 15-20 years in a post on BlueMauMau. It's an interesting post from a lawyer who has seen many franchisees lose their life savings in franchise operations gone awry. Some prospective franchisees reading Richard's post may be surprised. Are the problems in franchising that serious? After all, isn't it safer to own a franchise than an independent business? The answer is an emphatic NO!!!!! The fact is that franchise businesses fail at about the same rate as independent businesses. One could… -

Is Conscious Capitalism Good Business?
24 Jan 2012 | 1:39 pmEvery MBA student from time immemorial has been asked to memorize the following as soon as he starts school: “The purpose of a corporation is to maximize shareholder wealth.” On some levels it seems to be an indisputable axiom. But on other levels, after the economic debacles of 2008-2009 people with political persuasions right, left and center have begun to ask the question: “Why?” Doesn’t a corporation also have a responsibility to its other stakeholders: employees [and franchisees] and customers and the communities within which it thrives? More importantly,… -
Too Big to Fail
23 Jan 2012 | 10:39 amAs the founder of the Franchise Research Institute, I am sometimes asked why mega-franchises like McDonalds and Subway don't seem to rely on franchisee satisfaction surveys to market their franchise opportunities, when it proves to be such a valuable tool for other franchisors, not only for marketing purposes but also for key internal decisions. It's my opinion that these brands have reached the almost mythic status of being "too big to fail." What anyone who is considering becoming a franchisee needs to ponder is this: A mega-brand may have reached the critical… -

18 Jan 2012 | 5:38 pmHave you noticed that Kodak is nearly out of business? Growing up in the 1960’s and ‘70’s, I saw that nearly every family had a Kodak camera. I still have mine. Those yellow boxes were everywhere and getting your very own Kodachrome camera was seemingly a rite of passage, heck, Paul Simon even wrote a song about it. As digital cameras gained popularity, Kodak stuck to what they believed. They sneered at digital’s quality, righteous in their knowledge that Americans would NEVER give up shiny pictures for their photo albums. Today, cell phone cameras take most of the…

9 Jan 2012 | 3:36 pmThink of your social media accounts (most likely you have a Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube page) as an extension of your franchise’s customer service. Before social media became popular, customers called or went back to the store to comment on services or products and resolve issues. But take a look at the social media accounts of some of the more popular brands in America. They use Twitter and Facebook as not only a viable solution for marketing but also to answer questions and concerns. Customers keep your business alive, so keeping them happy is top priority. Say the customer emails your…

Somehow, at ages 72, he manages to outwit rival coaches half his age while teaching the game to young men in their late teens. They will home come looking for new horizons and new opportunities. Luckily, franchising is there to assist them. I’ve been alerted to two interesting articles on veterans in franchising which each suggest that veterans will continue to enjoy more and more opportunities in franchising in the coming years. One centered on the large number of military veterans who attended last weekend’s Franchise Expo South convention in Miami Beach. CBS spoke with… -
Inside The New ‘Euro’ McDonald’s
23 Jan 2012 | 9:04 amLast year, we featured a blog post in our regular ‘Franchising Abroad’ series from Sweden. In the post, I mentioned my interest in the interior architecture of Swedish McDonald’s, which borrow a lot from popular Swedish design fans from companies like Ikea. McDonald’s is in the process of renovating up to 800 stores around America. Nation’s Restaurant News was recently given an exclusive tour behind the new McDonald’s. I was interested to see that so many of them shared that similar Scandanavian aesthetic. You can view a slide show of the new… -

19 Jan 2012 | 8:47 amWe are three weeks into the new year and still many people are trying to get a grasp of which way the US economy will turn over the coming 12 months. Projections for the franchising industry all seem to target modest gains for 2012, and the real estate sector, which is one of the franchise sectors that bears the closest links to America’s macroeconomy, brings a similar dose of realism to its expectations for next year. Dave Liniger, chairman and founder of Re/Max, one of the world’s biggest property franchises recently recorded a short video for Youtube that outlined his 10…

Talking Funding First – Why a Reversal of the Traditional Franchise Sales Process is Critical
24 Jan 2012 | 6:42 amThe tightening of capital markets in recent years has engendered significant changes in the traditional franchise sales process where funding was discussed as the last step. The almost complete disappearance of investment capital for small businesses has resulted in a severe decline of franchise sales for many franchisors. Only those franchisors that responded to new economic conditions with a different approach have kept franchise sales going strong. I Can Hire an Attorney to Write the Franchise Agreement; Why Do I Need a Franchise Advisor?
9 Jan 2012 | 5:21 pmI spend many hours of my day talking with business owners who want to franchise their businesses and many ask me this question. Yet, attorneys address only one piece of the franchise development process – the legal side. There is no question that this is an extremely important component of franchising. However, there are many other equally critical elements. Competent franchise attorneys know how to write agreements that comply with Federal Guidelines and state franchise… -

18 Sep 2011 | 3:38 pmIt was over 20 years ago when I first read Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill., I have reread this life altering little book on many occasions, always discovering something new and relevant. One of the most influential concepts that this book brings forth is that of a “Master Mind Group” and its power to help us achieve our goals and objectives. The premise of the “Master Mind Group” is that before we can achieve our goals and desires we must first acquire the specialized knowledge in the field we have chosen tor bring our dreams into reality. Hill claims that it’s unlikely that…

Although not preferred, this post-termination negotiating period is sometimes necessitated by on-going negotiations and delayed decisions. Franchise Consulting or Franchise Brokerage
27 Jan 2012 | 10:00 amFranchise consulting is a field similar to any other consultant-to client relationship whereby the franchise consultant would charge a fee to a client in exchange for a particular service. This is how the field was traditionally defined. If a franchisor needed a particular service, whether it was the formation of their franchise agreement, business planning, marketing and sales advice or any other type of third party consulting services, they would hire the consultant, draft a contract and scope of service and pay consulting fees. -

Interview with Joe Novak, Senior VP of Franchise Marketing & Development for Mathnasium
27 Jan 2012 | 8:56 amThis is a guest blog post by Annabel Jones. For some, math is really as easy as 1-2-3. For others, it’s about as painful as a trip to the dentist.

7 Jan 2012 | 10:08 pmMoving forward from a challenging year for the franchise industry we’re seeing some smart incentives to a path of organic growth.

Pinkberry: Initiating with Buy
23 Jan 2012 | 6:13 amSector Summary: The dessert category is competitive, but not as competitive as some of the other sectors within the food industry. -
Little Caesars: Initiating With Neutral
13 Jan 2012 | 6:24 amSector Summary: Pizza has become one of America’s favorite foods with approximately 69,000 pizzerias in the US today. The pizza industry is a highly competitive sector and consists of both franchised and non-franchised outlets. The fierce competition results in pizza stores spending a large amount of money on advertising to help differentiate their product, and discounting is used frequently to boost sales. Because of this, pizza franchises must operate efficiently to maintain a good level of profit. Overall, we like the pizza sector, but are slightly cautious due to saturation. Investment… -
Manhattan Bagel: Initiating with Buy
11 Jan 2012 | 7:39 amSector Summary: The coffee, donuts and bagel sector has seen strong growth in the recent past. Starbucks, a publicly owned coffee company, paved the way with store locations at every city block and the popularity of their premium coffee beverages. Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s also entered the space with their own, lower priced coffee brands, which has given a healthy boost to their profits. What’s most compelling about the sector are easy operations, high margin products and scalability. We like the sector, but there are certainly a few key brands that stand out from the competition. -
Panchero’s: Initiating With Sell Rating
9 Jan 2012 | 7:57 amInvestment Decision: SELL Sector Summary: Mexican food is a growing sector in the food franchise space with tacos, burritos and nachos entering mainstream American diets. With Chipotle, a non-franchise concept, paving the way, many new concepts have emerged and become significant players. There is significant room to grow in this sector with the right concept, particularly given the increasing population of Spanish speakers. This food appeals to a large audience and while generally not healthy, consumers will continue to enjoy eating at such establishments. Investment Summary: Panchero’s is… -
